A diet built around grazing
Choose identified forage, prepare it carefully, and adapt the texture to the animal rather than relying on a lettuce-only menu.
Start with a forage plan
Sulcatas are grazing herbivores. LafeberVet lists grass hays such as timothy and orchard grass, with leafy weeds and suitable greens adding variety. Meat and pet-food diets are inappropriate. Use the searchable food guide to check both the botanical name and the plant part.
Hatchlings may manage tender, shorter pieces more easily than coarse hay. Offer an age-appropriate variety and discuss supplements with a reptile veterinarian. Juveniles and adults still need a fibrous grazing diet; increasing size is not a reason to switch to fruit or concentrated protein.
A practical feeding sequence
First identify the plant through a reliable botanical reference and, when uncertain, a local extension service or botanist. A photo, phone app, common name, or absence from a toxic list cannot establish safety. Keep unknown plants out of reach.
Use forage with a known, untreated history. Reject material contaminated by chemicals, roadside runoff, animal waste, mold, or sharp debris. Rinse suitable fresh greens, offer them on a clean surface, and remove spoiled leftovers. Do not collect mixed lawn-mower clippings of unknown composition.
Write down what you offered and what was eaten. Bring the diet list and supplement labels to a veterinary appointment instead of guessing a dose from a website.
Where guidance differs
Published guidance varies on occasional fruit, vegetables, and supplements. Our routine plan keeps fruit outside the forage base. The existing food reference marks items where recommendations differ and explains nutritional concerns separately from poisoning risks. A food search is not an individual feeding prescription.
